چکیده

Modifications to the transmission line model developed at the High Voltage Research Institute, Tomsk, USSR, are presented and compared between each other and with the modification proposed by the ItalianSwiss research team. The modifications considered differ from each other by the height dependent attenuation factor for the return stroke current pulse intensity. All of the attenuation factors, corresponding to various leader charge distributions along the channel, provide fairly good agreement of the calculated fields with the experimental data available. Some problems with modeling of the early and late stages of the return stroke process are discussed.

Expressions for far electric fields produced at an arbitrary altitude by lightning return strokes

[1] Electromagnetic fields produced at high altitudes by return strokes in cloud-to-ground lightning are needed in studies of transient luminous events in the mesosphere. Such calculations require the use of a lightning return stroke model. Two of the widely used return stroke models are (1) the modified transmission line model with exponential decay (MTLE) of current with height and (2) the mo...

Tall-Structure Lightning Return-Stroke Modelling

A lightning return-stroke model, based on the lightning return-stroke current derivative measured at the Toronto CN Tower is presented in this paper. A 3-section transmission line representation of the CN Tower along with the derivative of the modified Heidler function is used to simulate the measured current derivative signal. Reflections from major structural discontinuities of the CN Tower a...

Lightning electric field intensity at high altitudes: Inferences for production of elves

[1] Distant electric fields predicted by the transmission line (TL) model and by the modified transmission line model with exponential current decay with height (MTLE) are examined as a function of polar angle (elevation) and return stroke propagation speed. The lightning return stroke current waveform was approximated by a step function. The resultant electric field waveform for the TL model i...

Comment on ‘‘Return stroke transmission line model for stroke speed near and equal that of light’’ by R. Thottappillil,

[1] Electric fields on the ground 500 m, 5 km, and 50 km from the lightning channel base computed using the transmission line (TL) and antenna theory (AT) return-stroke models for a typical subsequent stroke current at the channel base and a return-stroke speed equal to the speed of light (v = c) are compared. The AT model gives a total electric field peak that is about 10% lower than the field...

Test of the transmission line model and the traveling current source model with triggered lightning return strokes at very close range

[1] We test the two simplest and most conceptually different return stroke models, the transmission line model (TLM) and the traveling current source model (TCSM), by comparing the first microsecond of model-predicted electric and magnetic field wave forms and field derivative wave forms at 15 m and 30 m with the corresponding measured wave forms from triggered lightning return strokes. In the ...
